If the album title, “I Should Have Stayed Dead”, doesn’t tweak your curiosity, I don’t know what would. Saxophonist and music historian Allen Lowe is the subject of a documentary film about his music and his battle with cancer. He recorded three albums worth of music and planned to release it at the same time as the film, but due to editing delays, the decision was made to release the music. There’s some tremendous music there, and you’ll hear two of the tracks featuring pianist Matthew Shipp on one and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith on the other. Satoko Fujii has now released five albums of her various large orchestras, and the last is so special; “Kappa Ondo” is dedicated to her father-in-law, Ichiji Tamura, a groundbreaking educator and artist known worldwide for his his innovative and influential teaching methods for persons with disabilities. Other notable new music this week comes from saxophonist John Dikeman’s Old Adam On Turtle Island Quartet, ROVA (once known as the Rova Saxophone Quartet and one of the longest-running bands in the freejazz realm), drummer Jeff Cosgrove’s trio, saxophonist J.D. Allen’s exploration into Moroccan Gnawa music, a blistering duet of Nordic who’s who – guitarist Raoul Bjorkenheim & drummer Paal Nilssen-Love – and another Nordic band with a twist – they love to fish – Jazz & Fly Fishing.
