This episode features some of the avant garde and free jazz music that you find on the Polish Fundacja Sluchaj label (FSR). It consistently releases leading artists of those genres, artists who are committed to originality, creativity and spontaneity. You’ll hear a brilliant debut from English bassist Barry Guy and Italian saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, finally meeting for the first time; the hugely influential German reed master Frank Gratkowski; the B.A.N.S. Band featuring pianist Sophie Agnel from France, saxophonist John Butcher from England, bassist Pascal Niggenkemper from Germany and Norwegian drummer Ståle Liavik Solberg; and bassist/guitarist Joe Morris, recently honoured at the Vision Festival for his Lifetime Contributions to the art. Also in this playlist, saxophonist Marty Ehrlich’s continued devotion to the preservation of the late saxophonist Julius Hemphill’s work with a huge compilation of his mentor’s compositions written for the World Saxophone Quartet, a preview of the upcoming second album by the Kris Davis Trio, Aussie guitarist Oren Amabarchi’s exploration of sound, accompanied by some excellent musicians from Sweden, and the reissue of “Of Mist and Melting” by guitarist Bill Connors.
