There are some excellent new releases to highlight in this edition of OMJ. The Sylvie Courvoisier Trio, with Drew Gress and Kenny Wolleson, continues its recent trend of making superior albums. The new “Éclats Live In Europe” reveals a group that is so in-sync and so explorative that finding a trio for comparison might be kind of difficult. “Éclats Live In Europe” is that good. Bassist Michael Formanek moved to Portugal a few years back and after barely getting settled, was offered a spot at a festival there. He chose to feature a Hammond B3 in a new septet. England’s wonderful pianist Alexander Hawkins can also churn up a storm on the B3, as you will hear on “New Digs”, another fine recording from Formanek. There’s a new Bill Frisell coming soon — “In My Dreams” – with a group of Frisell familiars playing together for the first time, but that’s not the case with Irreversible Entanglements, that irreverent, highly political, highly charged ensemble; their upcoming “Future Present Past” will shake some trees. Also new are “Brooklyn Stories” featuring guitarist/bouzouki player Ayman Fanous freewheeling with a who’s who of avant garde stars, French guitarist Paul Jarret, and another new album by reed man Jon Irabagon, this time playing bass sax. And there are several tracks of music from some of the finest Black musicians to grace our universe to recognize Black History Month.
