Highlights of this episode come from two of the rising reed players in the world today: Sam Gill from Sydney Australia & Federico Calcagno from Milan Italy. Their new albums are among the best I’ve heard this year. Gill, who is primarily an alto player, and his quartet Coursed Waters, dive into rugged improvisation and what Gill calls “bright harmony”. Calcagno leads his ensemble, The Dolphians, on bass clarinet mostly; they have some contemporary flavours in their music, but the roots of Eric Dolphy and ‘60s avant garde are omnipresent. Definitely check out these two. Other debuts for this week come from the prolific Ivo Perelman hooked up with trombonist Ray Anderson, the inevitable duo of John Scofield & Dave Holland, Aussie saxophonist Jeremy Rose, and the German quartet Schlaptizki. On the historical side, there’s music from pianist Gordon Beck who worked with so many different British artists from the 60s on. And after spinning a preview of the Dutch ensemble Spinifex’ newest a couple of shows back, the full album is here and ready to go.
