Perhaps the theme for some of the new releases debuting in this show is “group dynamics”; not so much what happens in the studio but getting there. No problem for Rodrigo Amado & The Bridge. The powerhouse Portuguese saxophonist just put out the call to the other members of the quartet – all acknowledged leaders of the avant garde/free jazz world (pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, bassist Ingebrigt Haker Flaten & drummer Gerry Hemingway) – and “Further Beyond” was completed with vigor and passion. Not so with the four Swedish Agnas brothers. There were signs that maybe this family band which was formed in 2008 wasn’t happy, going in, during and after the recording session. They did manage to get it together however and their new “Sista Forsurket” shows how talented they are. The Otherlands Trio came to be out of the uncertainty of the acclaimed Borderlands Trio (Stephan Crump, Kris Davis & Eric McPherson). Crump and McPherson wanted to keep going so they found a third, the great alto saxophonist Darius Jones, and The Otherlands trio was born. Their debut “Star Mountain” is stunning! Swiss guitarist Dave Gisler and his trio are
a solid working unit, based on long-time relationships and respect. After Jaimie Branch died, Gisler, bassist Raphaele Brossand & drummer Lionel Friedli decided they wanted to continue with the energetic path they had traveled playing with Branch. Maqam expert and trumpeter Amir ElSaffar decided to expand his trio to a quartet by adding Greek pianist Tania Giannouli for a specially commissioned event in Berlin. These are just some of the highlights of a very good show. Enjoy!!!!!!!
