There’s a distinctly European aspect to the new releases sampled this time around. French pianist Bruno Angelini was impressed by a quote from Wayne Shorter about how lotus flowers purify the water around them, so he decided to make a recording and dedicate it to Shorter, his favourite musician, and to a number of “lotus flowers” who have been trying to purify the world of its crap. This terrific album features just Angelini with two brilliant saxophonists, Angelika Niescier from Germany and Sakina Abdou from France. Other fine new releases test driven Polish trumpeter Wojeich Jachna, Danish saxophonist Amalie Dahl, a pair from England – saxophonist Paul Dunmall & the Hi-Res Heart Quintet, and Ti Ti Ti, a free jazz quartet from Slovenia. American saxophonist Miguel Zenon and his quartet recorded their first live album last year so watch for “Vanguardia Subterranea” – it’s a blazer. And finally, things open up with a track from the late bassist Johnny Dyani, as his “Witchdoctor’s Son” is being re-released again!
