Buried deep in my stacks of vinyl is a 1964 recording by English singer Cleo Laine with her exploration of the works of William Shakespeare, but Duke Ellington’s “Such Sweet Thunder” preceded that and remains one of the most popular works with old Willie and  jazz. (There’s a Canadian connection too. Ellington and the band were performing in Stratford Ontario at the same time as the 1956 Stratford Festival. Duke was inspired and decided his next project would be a tribute to Shakespeare’s works. And he came back to Stratford the next year to perform it.)

So to present day, and we find French guitarist, Marc Ducret, with a major project based on Lady MacBeth’s soliloquy from Act V of “MacBeth”. Funny, I don’t remember feeling very musical while studying that part of “MacBeth” in high school or college English. Who knew? Ducret’s work, which has been performed all over Europe is one of the feature recordings this episode. Another comes from the very unique ensemble, Anti-Rubber Brain Factory, also from France. Leader/bassist Yoram Rosilio drew upon his first exposure to the mariachi bands of Mexico while visiting that country to form the basis of another great eclectic and killin’ release by ARBF.

Several new albums from saxphonists hit this show: Tori Freestone from England, Nick Mazzarella from Chicago, Caroline Davis from Brooklyn, and Anders Lønne Grønseth from Norway all debut new music.  Plenty more great stuff, as always.

This episode of One Man’s Jazz demonstrates the wide-range of this music called jazz, from the free jazz of Slovenian guitarist Samo Salomon’s Freequestra to hip hop pioneers The Last Poets new recording (they always were tied to jazz) to the superstar quartet OGJB (Oliver Lake, Graham Haynes, Joe Fonda & Barry Altschul) to a plethora of imaginative trios and quartets including Sam Gill’s Coursed Waters from Sydney, Australia, Germany’s Angelika Niescier, Kenneth Jimenez and Dan Clucas from the US, and Finnish saxophonist Manuel Dunkel. Lots to enjoy and explore!

In April of 2015, the very important and highly influential Association For The Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) celebrated its 50th anniversary, and now, one of the seminal bands to emerge from those early days celebrates its own 50th anniversary: The Art Ensemble Of Chicago.  I saw them in concert in Edmonton over 35 years ago and that night remains uppermost in my musical memory banks. Original members Roscoe Mitchell and Famoudou Don Moyé remain today, and the current version of the Art Ensemble has released “We Are On The Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration” on Pi Recordings. It’s the feature album this week.
Also new and noteworthy are releases from Jerry Granelli, G.Calvin Weston and his Phoenix Orchestra, the ICP Orchestra from a live set in Albuquerque, pianist William Tatge and his trio, and German pianist Hans Ludemann &his TransEuropeExpress. Plus a whole bunch more of fine music, of course!

Generally, the first tune that I play from a new recording is the one that makes the biggest impression on me, but when I saw “Black Arthur’s Bounce” on the new recording from bassist Mark Dresser’s latest, I had no doubt which track was going to get played first. Anything with reference to the late Arthur Blythe captures my attention. And of course Marty Ehrlich on alto evokes the sound of Arthur with fire and grace. It’s a great piece of music. Dresser’s recording is just one of several fine new releases on this edition of One Man’s Jazz. I hope you enjoy the show.

May 2 #1099 – 20th Anniversary Show

This week’s One Man’s Jazz celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the program. It hit the air waves at CKUW 95.9 FM in Winnipeg on May 1, 1999. To celebrate, I decided not to take the easy way out and play my “favourite” recording of each year, but rather just plucked things out at random from 20 years of playlists starting with 1999, and tossed in a few highlight tales that happened along the way.

If you’ve listened to the show — be it one, a few, or a whole bunch over these 20 years — or allowed me to play your music, thank you wherever and whoever you are for being part of this musical journey. Ultimately I do this show for you. Radio without music and listeners? T’aint radio, is it?
