July 2019 Playlists

July 25 #1111

This episode features music from another independent record label in Europe, this time from the Krakow, Poland-based Audio Cave Records. The company has been in business since 2012, releasing jazz, electronic and alternative music. They spend a lot of attention into ensuring the sound of their products, whether cds, 180-gram vinyl or digital, is first class. Audio Cave releases music by up-and-coming as well as established artists.
In this show, you’ll hear tracks from established Polish bands like the Oles Brothers, Tadeusz Sudnik, and Silberman, along with Dutch flautist Mark Alban Lotz who recorded a live set in Wroclaw. One of those new artists for Audio Cave is saxophonist Wojciech Lichtanski, who is undoubtedly on his way to big things.
There’s also some new music from Harris Eisenstadt’s Old Growth Forest, Evan Parker with Jacob Anderskov’s Kinetic, Andrew Munsey, and Aussie veteran trumpeter Warwick Alder. It’s a good show. Enjoy!

Chicago’s amazing percussionist, Kahil El’Zabar, has been at the helm of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble since 1976. El’Zabar and saxophonist Edward Wilkerson Jr. began as a duo, but the Ensemble size swelled from time to time with the addition of various AACM musicians. For the most part it’s been a trio as it is today with baritone saxophonist Alex Harding and trumpeter Corey Wilkes joining El’Zabar, and the mission remains the same: pulse!, combining jazz with traditional African instrumentation and rhythm. A new album by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble is always a reason to celebrate and this episode debuts “Be Known: Ancient/Future/ Music”.
Another artist who’s been wending his way through the world of improvised music even longer than El’Zabar is Oregon-based saxophonist Rich Halley. He’s almost on a new release per year schedule. Of late, those albums have included players from Halley’s part of the country, but for the new “Terra Incognita” he draws upon the talents of familiar New Yorkers, bassist Michael Bisio, pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Newman Taylor Baker.
Other new releases this time around come from Satoko Fujii with drummer Ramon Lopez, Polish duo the Oles Brothers, Swiss trumpeter Christof Mahnig & Die Abmahnung, Germany’s Zwitschermaschine, and Native Speaker from The Netherlands. As always, there’s much more to listen to.

July 4 #1108

Music tells story as much as a storyteller, dance, theatre, etc.  This episode features some definite stories wrapped in improvisation.  Vancouver guitarist Tony Wilson has already written a fictional novella about an addicted busker surviving on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  Tony lived on that street, and his story came out in a recording called “A Day’s Life.” Now he’s back with another revelatory piece of work:  “This Way Through The Forest”, music (part of a multi-media presentation) that shares his story as a teenager living at St. Joseph’s Training School in Ontario, a place that was fraught with physical and sexual abuse of the boys who were sent there.  This album debuts on this episode of One Man’s Jazz.
Twenty-year-old saxophonist Isaiah Collier is writing his own story every time he steps on the stage. Steeped in the traditions of Chicago and the AACM, Collier has been drawing the attention of the jazz world.  His new recording “The Unapologetic Negro” displays some of that fire and power.  You’ll want to listen to his music.
New recordings also appearing on the show come from Japanese reed man Akihiro Yoshimoto, the German powerhouse ensemble Zwitschermaschine, guitarist Dan Phillips, Aussie saxophonist Jon Crompton and Portuguese drummer Joao Lencastre and a new quartet. In fact there’s a good sampling of the Portuguese scene in the persons of André Carvalho, Gabriel Ferrandini, and The Attic.   I hope you like the music. It’s hard as nails.
