The spotlight shines on a number of excellent releases from Europe and Chicago in this edition. German bassist Felix Henkelhausen is back with the second recording by his quintet and it jumps on to my list of outstanding 2025 releases. Henkelhausen’s talents have been attracting much attention and this new album reinforces that his compositions and concepts are outstanding as well. Also from Europe, you’ll hear music by Norway’s Chrome Hill celebrating 25 years of existence as a band, Portuguese drummer João Martins and his ensemble, the Northern European saxophone Quartet, Littorina, and Danish guitarist Mark Solborg’s latest exploration with his Tungemal Project. Two trios from Chicago reinforce that city’s rep for free jazz – the reunion album of Wheelhouse (Dave Rempis, Jason Adasiewicz & Nate McBride), and an emerging trio of saxophonist Keefe Jackson, bassist Jakob Heinemann & drummer Adam Shead on “Stinger”. Debuting at the Vision Festival the same night as this show will be posted online is “Armageddon Flower”, a brilliant collaboration between Matthew Shipp’s String Trio and saxophonist Ivo Perelman.
