Female power highlights the new albums sampled in this edition: Danish saxophonist Signe Emmeluth now living in Norway, joined by her Scandinavian quartet, Amoeba, talks up love on their new release “With Love”, while the heralded composer/arranger/conductor Maria Schneider laments on the lack of dialogue with her new EP “American Crow”. Improvisational vocalist/poet Shelley Hirsch takes vocal art and spoken word to new and unexpected places on her new “Vanish” with bassist Christian Weber and drummer Alfred Vogel. After finding some intrigue in the playing of pianist Yvonne Rogers on the new Adam O’Farrill album, I obtained a copy of her debut “Seeds” and it confirms my thought that she’s going to be a major figure in the improvised world. Other new recordings of note come from Italian saxophonist Tino Tracanna & his Panorchestra, English free jazz saxophonist John Butcher flying solo, the trio WaSaBi (pianist Walter Thompson, guitarist Sam Day Harmet & percussionist Billy Martin), the Eden Inverted Collective also from Italy, and the quartet of Jacob Sacks, Mat Maneri, Eivind Opsvik & Billy Mintz (piano/viola/bass/drums). An interesting lineup this time out.
