New kids on the block (they’re all under 25), Things Of This Nature are turning heads and ears on the NY scene with their fiery approach to tradition: they’re stretching it like a rubber band, like, oh let’s say a guy like Ornette. Check them out for the first time in this episode of One Man’s Jazz. Two of my favourite Norwegian players – and both drummers – coincidentally show up in this show with great new albums: Thomas Strønen with Time Is A Blind Guide & Gard Nilssen and an expanded Acoustic Unity celebrating their 10th year of powerhouse music. Austin Texas is the home of Atlas Maior, an improvising free jazz quartet that features the sound of the Middle Eastern oud – transfixing music. Bass clarinetist Ziv Taubenfeld has a trio on his new “You, Full of Sources and Light”, while trumpeter Dave Douglas examines the Four Freedoms with his new quartet. New from Europe are the German trio TOIY and two bassists, Demian Cabaud from Argentina but living now in Portugal and Luca Curcio from Italy. Top this one off with a historical gem from the Rivbea Live Series from No Business Records featuring 70’s Oliver Lake, and there’s something here for everyone.
