September 5, 2019 Playlist #1116

Several new recordings this episode for you, and all very notable. Three of the biggest names in jazz have been performing all over the world for almost the last two years: Dave Holland, Chris Potter and Zakir Hussain, under the name Crosscurrents Trio. Holland and Potter had been part of a larger Crosscurrents band, formed by Hussain in 2017. Their new recording, “Good Hope” will be released in October; you’ll hear two tracks in the opening set. In the second set, another trio of musicians very comfortable in the setting, in fact these three grew up together in Minneapolis: Dave King and Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus) and Craig Taborn. King put Golden Valley Is Now back in 2010 for his King For Two Days Event, but the three were exploring music together as teenagers. Their new release for Intakt is very different. And in the same vein, of familiarity, Steve Lehman’s Trio debuts “The People I Love” is now out on Pi Recordings. Lehman’s take on some favourite music and composers is up to his usual standards and he’s got Craig Taborn with him as well. There’s new music from Aussie trumpeter Phil Slater, saxophonist José Lencastre from Portugal, solo piano from Stefan Aeby, saxophonist Stephen Gauci and a pair of tunes from bassist Mario Pavone and his Dialect Trio on the new “Philosophy” release. Finish that up with maybe one of the best jazz vocal performances of all time, and this show is
mighty interesting.
