A new release of anything Miles Davis-related is bound to attract attention, so expect to hear and read much about “Rubberband”, the 1985 project which was Miles’ first for Warner Brothers after he had suddenly left Columbia Records. It was an album that Miles intended to head in a different direction, more funk and soul with singers like Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan. Miles was pleased with the results but Warner’s head of jazz, Tommy Lipuma, said no. The attention then shifted to recording “Tutu”. Those masters sat until 2017 when the Miles Davis Estate reclaimed the music and with much added production completed the project.

Also new this episode: great stuff from drummer Dan Weiss’ “Utica Box” with a second bassist added to the trio, tunes from some of Poland’s rising stars — KAMASZ (guitarist Marek Kadziela, bassist Jacek Mazukiewicz & drummer Krzysztof Szmanda), Kuba Wiecek Trio & Jerzy Maczynski), violist Mat Maneri, bassist Hilliard Greene and saxophonist Michael Eaton, heard last show with Tenor Triage.

And speaking of re-issues, French drummer Olivier Le Goas has made available a recording he did in 2005 with Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi and the now-late John Abercrombie. Can’t have too much Abercrombie, I say.
