I’ve been a fan of Swiss guitarist Dave Gisler from the first time I heard him play; I think it was with Christoph Irniger. They were both revealing the influence of their time in New York City soaking up the sounds. Gisler’s just released a live set of his own trio playing at the Unterhort Festival Munich in 2019. His guest for that night was none other than fiery trumpeter, Jaimie Branch. The album just sizzles. It’s one of the feature discs on this week’s episode. Another favourite trio of mine is Hot Heros from Finland. They also brought a guest into the fold for their new “Vodjanoi”, and perhaps that guest is a bit unexpected: Finland’s eminent pianist and composer, Iro Haarla. She and Hot Heros delve into music influenced by the northern part of their country, and the result is magical.
And let’s talk Tim Berne, who’s having quite a year, releasing music from start to finish: two Snake Oil releases for Intakt, several of his own on bandcamp.com, and now two duet sides, one with Matt Mitchell, the other with Nasheet Waits. Berne is burnin’! Pianist Russ Lossing is holding his own for great releases for 2020 too; his new one, due out in January, features a well-seasoned quartet.
