This episode introduces some fine new artists and albums and says goodbye to two very important and brilliant musicians. Guitarist and composer Matt Forker is a fast-riser on the New York scene and new to the show. His music is very interesting. From Poland, the eclectic quartet Nuda makes its debut, while interpretations of Bartok are not particularly unusual in jazz, but pianist Lucian Ban, violist Mat Maneri and reeds superstar John Surman add another take on Bartok, this time from the composer’s compilation of Transylvanian Folk Songs. A new saxophonist from Finland drops a new release — Adele Sauros — and there’s music from French bassist Théo Girard. Plus, a a wee peek at pianist Sebastien Ammann and his band Color Wheel and the release “Resilience”.
Some reminisces and music of two very important musicians who passed away recently are also featured: pianist McCoy Tyner and drummer Jon Christensen. Both occupied prominent places in the ranks of my musical heroes.
