There’s always a lull following the holiday season, so programming new releases becomes a bit problematic, but one new album this week fills the gap incredibly well. Drummer Jim Black is one of the best out there, popping up on sessions of all sorts. “Reckon”, his new release for Intakt Records, is flat out one of the best trio albums I’ve heard in some time. The rhythms are insane, the piano of Elias Stemeseder is outstanding, and the bass of Thomas Morgan is amazing. I think you’ll love what you hear from the Jim Black Trio. Also new this week is “Nuvem” from Portuguese saxophonist Mario Santos, William Parker and Dave Sewelson captured live at The Bushwick, avant garde from Argentinean trio SLD, and German drummer Nathan Ott with a notable version of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman”. The rest of the music is none too shabby either. Enjoy.
