August has arrived, and with it, some excellent new recordings that I immediately placed on my potential favourites of 2020. One comes from the trio of saxophonist Jason Robinson, bassist Bruno Räberg & drummer Bob Weiner. The “Urgency Of Now” has all the ingredients for a most memorable recording. Another album that I think is very special is a powerhouse session by L.A. trumpeter Dan Rosenboom and his quintet. “Points On An Infinite Line” comes with power, sass, energy and statement. Admittedly I don’t play a lot of big band recordings on this show, but I could not pass up saxophonist Andrew D’Angelo’s DNA Orchestra. Wow! He stretches the concept of a big band on this recording. Other noteworthy debuts this week come from a Norwegian group called Barrage which definitely takes no prisoners, and the Chicago group Stirrup augmented by another of Fred Lonberg-Holm’s groups, the Lightbox Orchestra. Best you don’t pass up this show!
