I first heard pianist Joshua White on an album by L.A. saxophonist Gavin Templeton in 2017 or 2018. I was really impressed to say the least, so I contacted Joshua to inquire about his own recordings, but unfortunately things didn’t work out. Fast forward to this year, and I came across Joshua again, this time on a Jason Robinson release. This time Joshua and I connected. I got his “13 Short Stories” and in this episode of OMJ you’ll hear why I think this guy is a special player. Another fine pianist who hasn’t been heard on the show for a while is Mara Rosenbloom. I’ll feature a track from her recent “Respiration”. There are some “previews’ of new albums coming from Clean Feed (a teaser for next week’s show), a track from the always impressive Australian Art Orchestra’s latest “Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger Than Space” (amen to that), and something maybe never heard on One Man’s Jazz: an actual Christmas tune – sort of. I’ve got a track for you from Chicago powerhouse saxman, Mars Williams, on his fourth volume of “An Ayler Chistmas “. That’s your clue this is not your typical Christmas album.
