Finland is a country that has learned to be efficient given its climate; it doesn’t waste anything. In music too it appears. The renowned Finnish composer Jean Sibelius said “Don’t write any unnecessary musical notes! … We couldn’t afford to lose or waste anything.” That seems to apply to the jazz scene in Finland. There the musicians flirt with minimalism, simple yet edgy lines. Get it out there fast and often furious. This episode has several new recordings from that
country, which is in the midst of a true jazz boom. The main centres of action are Helsinki, Tampere and Turko but the whole country is hearing jazz sounds of all kinds.
We Jazz, a busy label and presenter, sent along some new albums to sample, and you’ll also hear Hot Heros, a trio that will remind you of Black Motor. They’ve just released their second album for Eclipse Music.
As per usual there are several tracks from musicians from other countries: Samuel Ber from Belgium is back with Tony Malaby in tow; The Pen Club from Australia debuts its new “Data Retrieval”; a Portugal/Italian group, Tetterapadequ, dazzles; and some great new tunes from American bands led by Eric Hofbauer, Daniel Carter & Federico Ughi, & Jamie Saft’s new quartet will definitely catch your attention.

Two of the very finest piano improvisers are highlighted this episode: Matt Mitchell and Satoko Fujii. Mitchell’s music tends to be extremely hard to play, according to Matt, and it’s also pretty hard to describe in a few sentences. Complicated? Genius? Outside the box? Judge for yourself on a couple of tunes from Phalanx Ambassadors. Satoko Fujii spent 2018 releasing one recording a month, all different, all unique, as a celebration of her 60th birthday last year. She continues to release brilliant music, this time a solo piece dedicated to her grandmother who lost her hearing but told Satoko that she could still hear beautiful music but couldn’t describe it. Satoko had that in mind when doing this album. She uses every piece of the piano’s construction to create “Stone”.
There’s plenty of other great music to check out including some more laid back than usual from Pneuma, a voice and clarinet trio, and from Here’s To Us, a Swedish quartet.

Three new releases from NoBusiness Records lead the way this episode. NoBusiness is based in Vilnius, Lithuania and digs up previously recorded music that often received less attention than deserved, as well as featuring artists who are always worth of more notoriety, like Sam Rivers, Howard Riley or Bobby Bradford. The label also records recent music too: Albert Beger, perhaps the leading saxophonist in Israel, debuts “The Gate” with his fine quartet, while the powerhouse trio, The Attic – Rodrigo Amado saxophone, Gonçalo Almeida bass and Onno Govaert drums introduce “Summer Bummer”, their latest. You’ll also hear an exceptional trumpet/drums duo from Kirk Knuffke and Whit Dickey on “Drone Dream”.
Also new, bassist André Carvalho from Portugal introduces his new Hieronymous Bosch-inspired “The Garden Of Earthly Delights” which is in stark contrast to the fervor of fellow countryman, drummer Gabriel Ferrandini’s “Volupias”. And I can’t forget some terrific piano playing by Italian Gianni Lenoci and his trio on an album that stretches the standards. Lots more, too, like Anti-Rubber Brain Factory and Mark Dresser. This is a good one!

Trios and quartets dominate this episode of One Man’s Jazz, highlighted by saxophonist Philipp Gropper from Germany. His quartet features some of the top heavy players in pianist Elias Stemeseder, drummer Oliver Steidle and bassist Robert Landfermann. These guys do not go gentle into the night. There’s the French foursome, Ornicar, making their debut on the show, repeat appearances by Casper Nyvang Rask from Denmark, Dan Phillips from Chicago, Aussie Sam Gill and OGJB. Trios abound also with debuts from Polish bassist Franciszek Pospieszalski, Gentiane MG from Quebec, Rachel Musson’s powerful trio from England, rising star from Finland, Alexi Tuomarila, and a bristling threesome from Brisbane, Australia, Milton Man Gogh. And more as usual, including the ringtone on my cellphone. Enjoy!
