There are times when I could break out in giggles of joy at the choices of music I have, and this show is one of those times. So much bleepin’ great new stuff! Right off the hop with Sons of Kemet, then moving to Broken Shadows, a NY quartet of favourites and friends: Dave King and Reid Anderson from The Bad Plus, with Tim Berne and Chris Speed, playing the true jazz standards of Ornette, Dewey, Hemphill and Haden. Then a cool trio set from German alto player Silke Eberhard, before closing the first hour with pure improv from Russ Lossing and Gerry Hemingway. The second hour pays tribute to the late bassist Mario Pavone, then a revival of sorts of Jack DeJohnette’s “Sorcery”, with a final track from another killer release from trumpeter Dan Rosenboom. In the final set, alto player Maria Grand’s new one gets sampled before there’s a taste of a new young quartet called Nortonk. The closer is from France’s Tikkun, an exploration of Judeo/Mahgreb flavoured improvisation. So much fun! Hope you enjoy it.
